September 19

The first day of SAT-10 testing went very well! Please continue to encourage your student to do his/her very best!

Hours 1, 5, 6, 8: continue with variable expressions Homework: Finish 1.3 Practice B

Hour 2: continue with order of operations Homework: finish 1.2 Practice A

Hour 3: Review of Scientific Notation Homework: p. 622 13-18

September 18

This week we will have shortened classes due to SAT-10 testing.

Hours 1, 5, 6, 8: Today we filled in our note-taking guides over section 1.3--variables and expressions Homework: Finish 1.2 Challenge Practice worksheet

Hour 2: We are still playing catch up! We filled in our note-taking guides for section 1.2--order of operations. Homework: make sure you have guided practice 1-3 done for tomorrow

Hour 3: We are going to focus today on multiplying and dividing numbers in scientific notation. Homework: p. 76-77 31-36, 38-46, 48-54

Thursday, September 14, 2006

September 15

Hours 1, 5, 6, 8: Today we will be learning/reviewing order of operations (some of you might remember Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally or PEMDAS). One of the most common errors with order of operations is always doing multiplication first and then division. This is not correct. The correct method is to do parenthesis (or other grouping symbols) inside out, exponents, multiplication AND division from left to right, addition AND subtraction from left to right. Homework for the weekend is to finish 1.2 Practice B (Evens only).

Hour 2: We got a little behind because we spent so much time on our textbook inventory so today we will be doing the lesson over interpreting graphs. Homework for the weekend is to finish 1.1 Practice A.

Hour 3: Today we will be learning about scientific notation. It is important to remember that, when written correctly, a number in scientific notation is a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. The homework for the weekend is to do Practice 11 1-21 only.

September 13 and 14

Whew! What a week already! Due to block scheduling, I will only see each class once during the next two days.

Math 8: We are investigating the resources that accompany our new book, McDougal-Littell's Mathematics Course 3. You can find a link to McDougal's website on the right hand side of this page or you can visit www.classzone.com, choose math, choose middle school math, click on Missouri and then choose Middle School Mathematics Course 3. On this page, you will find parent resources, extra examples, practice problems and a link to the online textbook. This is especially important since students will only have access to in-class copies of the book. To access the online book for the first time, students must create a new account. The required student access code is 0618594027. All students should have recorded this in their agendas. After creating a new account, students will be able to login with just their username and password.

In class today we completed a textbook inventory which was a guided "scavenger hunt" through the book so that students became aware of the resources available to them. We also learned about histograms and frequency tables. Histograms look just like bar graphs except the bars have no spaces between them and they have intervals on the x-axis (horizontal axis). The homework is to complete Practice 1.1 worksheet for Friday. We will also grade the textbook inventory which should have been completed in class.

Integrated I: Today we reviewed integers (positive and negative numbers). In addition to this, we reviewed evaluating expressions for values...I think they are feeling a bit more challenged now!!! The homework is two-fold. Complete the skills bank worksheet, evens only as well as p. 67-70 1-12, 15-26, 28, 29, 33-34, 49-52.

September 11, 2006

Because of today's early release, classes are cut down to 30 minutes. During this time, all classes will be reviewing for their respective quizzes, which will be on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The math 8 quiz will cover all four operations with fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing).

The Int. 1 quiz will be over similar and congruent polygons

I'm looking forward to a great week!!!

September 1

Today, both classes took a quiz (as they will most Fridays) over the week's materials. This is helpful so I know if I need to reteach any concepts.

homework:

hours 1, 5, 6, 8: finish Whale Weight worksheet

Hours 2, 3: No homework

You can expect to receive an e-mailed progress report from me today (and every Friday). Please keep in mind it is very early in the semester! Because most classes do not have a lot of grades in the gradebook, each grade dramatically affects the overall grade at this point. As more assignments are entered, each item will count for less of the overall grade.

If you do not receive an e-mailed progress report from me by the end of today, you may e-mail me at jmiller@liberty.k12.mo.us and request that you be added to the list. If you already gave me your e-mail address and did not receive one, it is possible it was typed in the computer incorrectly, so go ahead and e-mail me from the account you would like to receive these e-mails.

Have a great 3 day weekend!!!
